From October 11 to 12, 2025, a short-term expert team from Chongqing University Cancer Hospital, in collaboration with the 14th Chinese Medical Team in Papua New Guinea (PNG), conducted two large-scale breast health outreach events in Port Moresby, the capital of PNG. The events targeted local residents, employees of Chinese enterprises, and overseas Chinese communities, focusing on breast cancer screening and health education, while also offering consultations and check-ups for common internal diseases and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) services.

Community Outreach: Bringing Care to Grassroots Communities

On the afternoon of October 11, the team visited ELISEO Group’s headquarters for the first community outreach event, serving local residents and employees. Mr. Peng Zheng, General Manager of ELISEO, warmly welcomed the team, thanking them for providing professional breast health services to PNG women. He described the event as both a health initiative and a gesture of friendship.

Professor Wang Ying, President of Chongqing University Cancer Hospital, emphasized that breast cancer is a major global threat to women’s health, and early screening and prevention are critical. The multidisciplinary team, including specialists in breast surgery, ultrasound, and pathology, aims to help women understand their health and build proper disease prevention awareness through professional examinations and education.

On-site, Dr. Deng Yongchun delivered a breast health lecture, while Professors Zeng Xiaohua, Deng Shuting, and Hong RuiXia provided clinical breast exams, ultrasound screenings, and health consultations, distributing brochures on breast cancer prevention. The event was well-organized and well-received, with many women expressing that this was their first systematic breast examination, significantly improving their health awareness.

Other team members, including Professors Wang Ying, Zhang Yunyun, Dong Juanhui, Zeng Qin, and Dr. Sun Xieyi from the Chinese Medical Team, provided consultations and vital sign checks for common conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease.

Dr. Hou Boman, an acupuncture specialist from the 14th Chinese Medical Team, delivered a TCM lecture and provided acupuncture treatments, which were highly appreciated by attendees.

Special Session for Overseas Chinese: Professional Care and Emotional Support

On the afternoon of October 12, the team held a dedicated session at the Chinese Medical Team’s residence for overseas Chinese and Chinese nationals in PNG. Tailored to the challenges of expatriate life, experts offered personalized advice on breast health, chronic disease management, and mental well-being. Attendees expressed deep appreciation, feeling both professionally protected and emotionally comforted by the presence of top-tier medical professionals from their homeland.

The outreach was jointly executed by multidisciplinary experts from Chongqing University Cancer Hospital’s Breast Cancer Center, Radiation Oncology, Ultrasound, and Pathology departments, in collaboration with the 14th Chinese Medical Team. Over two days, more than 200 individuals were served, with over 150 ultrasound screenings conducted (approximately 100 for local residents). Over 100 health education materials were distributed, effectively raising awareness of breast cancer among local women and Chinese expatriates.

Notably, two suspected breast cancer cases were identified during screening. The team has arranged follow-up biopsy procedures and will develop individualized treatment plans based on the results.
